These wear plates are designed to protect the upper and lower surfaces inside the rotor from the feed as it passes through the rotor (material build-up protects the sides).
The wear plate is held in place by the centrifugal force of the rotor as it rotates, there are no nuts and bolts, just some clamps to allow the wear plate to slide underneath. This makes them easy to change and remove.
Due to the underutilization of the maximum throughput of the rotor and the use of an incorrectly shaped tail plate, the lower wear plate usually wears more than the upper wear plate.
